Essential oils were used extensively in Biblical times. We all have heard of the gifts of Frankincense and Myrrh to the baby Jesus. Why would these be gifts for a king?
We know now that the oils of Frankincense and Myrrh are highly anti microbial. Meaning that they would have been used as medicines and assure the health of this new born, as these oils were used for assuring the health of many children born to nobility in that era.
Even today, families in the middle east continue to use the frankincense crystals as remedies for common ailments. The crystals of frankincense resin are kept in water, and the molecules disperse in the water. When someone feels like they are coming down with something, they drink from the water and fill up the container to replenish the supply.
Frankincense was and is still used in many religious ceremonies because is has the ability to stimulate the amygdala, the seat of our emotions. Science is also proving that the emotions are a critical factor that allows our thoughts to manifest. (Of course that goes for good thoughts as well as bad- and that is another topic although you can see how oils can help in meditation and spiritual practices.)
Myrrh is a heavier oil and historically has been applied on the placenta to prevent “evil spirits” from traveling to or from mother and child. The oil was also used to lubricate the perineum to help prevent tears during childbirth. Having a supply of myrrh oil would have been appreciated by Mary for her own safety and comfort as well as for the health of her child.
Myrrh was and is still used as a perfume base to keep the lighter flowery oils stabilized. The lighter the oil, the shorter the aroma will last; the addition of a heavier oil will help the scents to linger longer for our enjoyment and health.

Fall is a time of year when sinus-y stuff starts to happen.
Many people attribute sinus problems to the spring, but fall is also a major time of difficulty for sinus sufferers.
Here are some reasons why:
–Mold produced by leaf decay
–Potent weed allergens
–Decay from bug death
–Heating systems coming on
–Less fresh air in households
–Cooler weather makes us crave sweets and carbs
(eating them can affect our sinuses too)
It is true that our external environment has a huge role to play in attributing to sinus
problems, but our internal environment (inside our bodies) has more of an influence on sinus
conditions than the outside of our body.
If our internal environment is in “good shape”, then it can help combat what we are exposed
to externally.
What constitutes “good shape”?
–Balanced ecology in the gut (decent population of good bacteria with little yeast overgrowth)
–More alkaline and less acid (eating veggies and fruits and not sugar, caffeine, white flour)
–Well hydrated
–Well rested
–Well oxygenated (daily exercise)
–Well cleansed (bowels moving)
Why is balanced ecology in the gut such an important factor as it relates to sinus health?
The entire alimentary canal (the gastrointestinal system starting with the mouth and ending with the
anus) is made up of mucous membrane. We often call the abdominal portion of the gastrointestinal system
“the gut”.
When the gut has a good ecological terrain of balanced flora it can influence the other
areas of the body that have the same mucous membrane tissue.
Think about where else mucous membrane is in the body:
Respiratory System
–sinuses
–mouth
–nose
–windpipe and lungs
Urogential System
–vagina
–urethra
–urinary bladder
These areas are often affected by candida or yeast overgrowth which can lead to symptoms which are often called ‘infections’ (many times they are infections, but many times they are just an overgrowth of yeast).
In the years of my practice I saw many people with sinus conditions.
This condition was often accompanied by other problems in the body – such as allergies, skin disorders, frequent headaches, depression, stomach problems, and colon issues to name a few.
Many of these people loved and often ate these foods:
–Cheeses, especially aged
–Wine
–Sugar
–Mushrooms
–Bread made with yeast
–Food with preservatives (packaged food)
–Cakes, pastries, cookies
–Pizza
–Acid forming beverages: coffee, tea, soda
And very often these folks were constipated.
Along with eating an balanced alkaline diet, here are two very effective ways to deal with sinus
issues:
–Colon cleansing
Cleansing the colon can keep the overgrowth of candida at bay.
Sinus conditions clear up when the colon is clear.
As a former Wellness Center owner I used to observe that when people had colonics with good results, they
almost always simultaneously experienced sinus drainage. Any sinus congestion they had before their cleansing often disappeared with the good results of the cleanse.
Nutritional products that you can use at home for cleansing, and even foods that help cleanse the body can offer the same results as it relates to sinuses.
–Using therapeutic grade essential oils
This is a no brainer. If you understand how therapeutic essenttial oils create an environment where overgrowth or imbalance of micro-organisms can NOT take place – in other words the overgrowth of yeast, fungus, and any pathogenic organisms will not occur, then you can see why using these for sinus problems can be very helpful.
Many microbes, especially the ones that don’t serve us, love to hang out in dark moist environments – and that is exactly what our sinus cavities are (note how they are called ‘cavities’) - a dark moist environment.
Inhalation, diffusing, and even taking essential oils internally can be extremely helpful for sinus sufferers. If you want to take them internally, make sure the label has “Supplemental Facts” on it (overseen by the FDA) – this way you know you can them take internally.
You may be hard pressed to find that on labels in essential oils, but you will find it in Young Living oils – that is one of the many reasons I love Young Living.
Make sure you see the short video clip below on how to use an essential oil for inhalation.

You have always been told to increase your vitamin C when you have a cold – right? People have thought I am crazy for saying that vitamin C can help reduce allergy symptoms. Think about this… the allergy is an immune response to something the body sees as an invader.
Boost Your Immune System and you reduce the histimic response to allergens. I saw it happen in a man who fell in love with a woman who owned a cat. He loved her but the cat made him cry and sneeze and talk funny. When he boosted his vitamin C, his responses went away in a few weeks. He was able to reduce the amount he was taking but he continues to take it.
I like to take a C vitamin in addition to a related nutrient, quercetin. This, along with a saline nasal rinse using the neti-pot and sea salt with therapeutic quality essential oils, has eliminated what was once a chronic series of sinus infections.
Take a look at what Dr. Howenstein says of the power of Vitamin C in his article regarding using vitamin C in drug addictions:
“Human beings lack the L-gulonolactone oxidase enzyme (GLO). Lack of this enzyme makes humans unable to synthesize ascorbate from blood glucose. All mammals except primates, guinea pigs, and humans use glucose to create ascorbate when placed in stressful situations. A normal animal under minimal stress increases ascorbate output to the human equivalent of 10 to 20 grams daily. Under physical and chemical stress, animals can increase this ascorbate output three to five fold.
A daily intake of 10 to 20 grams by an unstressed human is not high. Under stress the need for ascorbate may go up to 30 to 100 grams daily. The continuation of sub-therapeutic doses of vitamin C recommended for 40 years in the USA would barely keep animals alive in poor health. High doses of vitamin C in viral infections have proven amazingly effective. The low daily level of vitamin C in humans obtained from our foods grown in depleted soil has produced a state of chronic subclinical scurvy (CSS Syndrome). This problem probably affects more than 90 per cent of humans. “
Studies on Ascorbate
Humans suffer severe damage from stress unless they are being provided supplemental ascorbate, as their needs may rise to 30 to 100 grams of ascorbate daily. Uncorrected, this metabolic disorder keeps humans in subclinical scurvy their whole lives.
This deficiency of proper amounts of ascorbate and vitamin C produces:
o Arteriosclerosis. Dr. Linus Pauling has shown that 6 grams of vitamin C combined with 6 grams of Lysine in divided dosage causes prompt healing of arteriosclerosis and normalization of treadmill tests. Blood pressure normalizes.
o Inability to tolerate stress.
o Exposure to toxic substances in large amounts may prove fatal (narcotics, snake bite poisons, barbiturates, PCP, heroin, alcohol, marijuana, LSD) as the body cannot degrade these toxic substances without supplemental ascorbate.
o Unnecessary morbidity from viral infections. Dr. Klenner saw remarkable healings in polio,[2] including bulbar forms, when he treated patients with large daily doses of intravenous vitamin C(100 grams).
o Greater possibility of prolonged fatal low blood pressure occurs when ascorbic acid is not promptly given in all forms of shock.[3] Twelve grams intravenously promptly restores blood pressure to normal. Barbiturate poisoning and carbon monoxide poisoning also promptly respond.
o Pain from terminal cancer,[4] burns, and snake bite[5] is promptly quenched by the analgesic effects of ascorbate therapy. Morphine can be discontinued.
o Compromised immune function occurs in diabetics and persons with high blood sugar values. High blood sugar values cause inability of macrophages and killer lymphocytes to kill cancer cells and bacteria, so malignancies grow unchecked and infections become fatal. The provision of ascorbate decreases the amount of sugar available to raise the blood sugar by creating NADPH, which creates superoxide and reactive oxygen species that kill pathogens. Ascorbic acid also promotes the production of 5 carbon sugars (ribose and deoxyribose) that can be turned into DNA and RNA. When ascorbate is lacking, these new white blood cells needed to fight infection are not built because the DNA and RNA fragments are lacking.
Ascorbate has important analgesic effects that have been utilized to relieve patients with terminal cancer of pain, which may be due to bony spread of malignancies and tumor growth into painful sites. The use of ascorbates not only relieves their pain but also stops rapid progression of cancer, as many cancers have morphine receptor sites on their surfaces.
From Dr. James Howenstein, MD May 28, 2008 article Drug Addiction is Easy to Cure
So there you have it:
· humans cannot make vitamin C-
· they MUST get it via diet.
· Vitamin C is necessary to withstand stress,
· the more stress, the more we need.
· Stress includes emotional as well as chemical
· Vitamin C is needed to break down toxins
· Vitamin C can reduce pain
· Vitamin C strengthens the immune system
· USDA recommendations are woefully inadequate
· You know when you have too much because you will develop loose stools. (The amounts in this article are quite large as they are dealing with addictions, increase your intake gradually to determine your daily tolerance)
· Vitamin C is water soluble so any that you do not use will be eliminated.
